HELB’s emergency loan is a lesser-known but important safety net for Kenyan university students who face sudden financial crises during their studies. Here is how it works.
What Is the HELB Emergency Loan?
The HELB emergency loan is a separate, smaller loan facility for currently enrolled students facing genuine unexpected financial hardship — distinct from the standard annual HELB loan. It is designed for situations where a student’s ability to continue studying is at immediate risk due to an unforeseen financial event. The emergency loan is not a top-up for general financial difficulty — it specifically targets crisis situations with documentable causes.
Qualifying Circumstances
HELB emergency loans are typically approved for: sudden death of the primary fee-paying parent or guardian, catastrophic event (fire, flood) destroying family property and income, sudden medical emergency requiring significant family expenditure, loss of employment by the primary breadwinner, and other documented sudden financial crises. General inability to afford fees (a situation known at the time of enrollment) does not qualify for an emergency loan — that is addressed through the standard HELB loan and bursary system.
Application Process
Step 1 — Log in to helb.co.ke and navigate to the emergency loan section of your account. Step 2 — Complete the emergency loan application form — describe the specific emergency, its timing, and its financial impact. Step 3 — Upload supporting documentation that directly evidences the crisis: death certificate and burial costs documentation (for parent death), hospital admission documents and bills (for medical emergency), police abstract and fire brigade report (for property loss), employer termination letter (for job loss). Step 4 — Submit and await HELB’s review — emergency loans are processed faster than standard loans given the urgency.
Emergency Loan Amount and Terms
HELB emergency loan amounts are typically smaller than annual HELB loans — usually KSh 10,000–30,000 depending on the documented need and available funds. The emergency loan is added to your total HELB balance and repaid under the same terms as your regular HELB loan after graduation. It is a loan, not a grant — but the terms are the same favorable HELB terms, not commercial rates.
Alternatives If Emergency Loan Is Not Sufficient
If the HELB emergency loan does not fully address your situation: contact your university’s Dean of Students office for institutional emergency funds (most universities have these), approach your county government’s social services office for emergency assistance, contact NGOs with emergency education support programs in your region, and speak openly with your university’s bursar about fee deferral while you stabilize your financial situation. Universities deal with student financial crises regularly and have more flexibility than the formal fee structure suggests.
