What is the HELB Portal?

The HELB portal at helb.co.ke is the official online platform of the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) of Kenya. It is the central hub where university and college students apply for government education loans, check their loan status, and manage their repayment once they complete their studies.

HELB was established by an Act of Parliament to provide financial support to Kenyan students pursuing higher education. It is a lifeline for thousands of students who cannot fully finance their own education. Through the HELB portal, students can access loans, bursaries, and scholarships from the convenience of their phones or computers. In the 2024 financial year, HELB disbursed over KSh 17 billion to more than 391,000 students.

FAQs – HELB Portal

1. Who is eligible to apply for a HELB loan?

All Kenyan students enrolled in accredited public and private universities, TVET colleges, and teacher training colleges are eligible. Private university students qualify for the loan component only, not scholarships.

2. How much HELB loan can I get?

The loan amount ranges from KSh 35,000 to KSh 60,000 per year depending on your household income and institution. Needy students qualify for higher amounts under the bursary component.

3. When does HELB disburse loans to students?

HELB typically disburses loans at the start of each academic year, usually in October/November for the first semester. Disbursement is sent directly to your registered institution’s fee account.

4. How do I repay my HELB loan after graduating?

Log in to the HELB portal, navigate to “Repayment”, and make payments via MPESA using the HELB paybill number 200999. Employed graduates also repay through their employers via PAYE deductions.

5. What is the HELB clearance certificate and how do I get it?

The HELB clearance certificate confirms you have fully repaid your loan. It is required for many government job applications in Kenya. Download it from the portal after your loan is fully settled.

6. What is the difference between HELB and the HEF portal?

HELB at helb.co.ke handles loans for older student cohorts. The Higher Education Fund (HEF) at portal.hef.co.ke handles the new integrated scholarship and loan system for students who joined university from 2022 onwards.
