Understanding the KNEC TVET grading system is essential for every technical and vocational student in Kenya. This comprehensive guide breaks down how your performance is evaluated, what each grade means for your certification, and how these grades impact your career prospects in Kenya’s job market.

The grading system implemented by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) is a crucial element within the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector in Kenya.

It offers a comprehensive framework for assessing the competencies and skills of TVET students.

This system not only ensures the alignment of qualifications with global standards but also plays a pivotal role in preparing students for the demands of the job market.

In this article, we will explore the structure of the KNEC TVET grading system and understand the examination terminologies including Distinction, Credit, pass, Fail and CRNM (course requirements not met) in the context of Kenya’s technical and vocational education.

Colleges and TVETs institutions in Kenya uses the KNEC examination for evaluation and promotion to the next step or modules. To move to the next module or next yearly phase, candidates always sit for KNEC examination.

To qualify to the next module a candidate should have a minimum of pass in all the units he or she sat for. If not a candidate can also proceed to the next module with pass in other units and not more than 2 fail units This is normally known as referred.

Referred means that in a unit a candidate scored a minimum of pass. In this instance a candidate proceeds to the next phase or module but he or she re-sits the referred units later.

Keep in mind that other courses require only one referred unit to proceed to the next step without re siting the whole academic year, this happens for courses with minimal units.

Note that to fully graduate from your course you should have a minimum average of pass in all your examinations results so with any referred paper you are required to register for KNEC exam and attain a minimum of pass in the referred units.

For the whole examination, marks are issued in 5 classes while there are 8 different grades in the individual papers under the KNEC grading system for colleges.

Each candidate receives the results in terms of the class and grade depending on his/her performance in the final practical and theoretical tests and the continuous assessment tests (administered by the college being attended).

Here is the relationship between the various classes and grades according to the KNEC grading system.

  • 1 PASS with DISTINCTION
  • 2 PASS with CREDIT
  • 3 PASS

CRNM: course requirement not met this happens when you fail to sit in for a particular exam offered in your course.

If a candidate scores 39 and below in a paper sat for, he or she is referred essentially meaning you failed the paper in this instance as stated earlier in the article you have to re sit the paper after paying for the KNEC exam again but this time you only pay for the failed/referred paper only through your college or TVET institution.
