Finance and accounting offer some of Kenya’s most consistently well-paid professional careers. Here are the best university options and how to align your degree with professional qualifications.
KCA University — The Accounting Specialist
KCA University markets itself as Kenya’s accounting and business university with programmes designed in close alignment with CPA Kenya (KASNEB) examinations. KCA’s accounting faculty has produced a significant proportion of Kenya’s CPA holders. Programmes: Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting and Finance), BAF (Bachelor of Accounting and Finance). Strong industry ties with Kenya’s accounting firms and banks. Fees: KSh 70,000–130,000/year. Entry: KCSE C+ for direct admission.
Strathmore — For Corporate Finance Careers
Strathmore’s Faculty of Commerce offers BSc Finance and BSc Accounting designed for Kenya’s corporate finance environment. Strong partnerships mean graduates access top banks, investment firms, and the Big Four audit companies. CFA programme partnership gives students structured exposure to international financial qualification content alongside their degree. Entry: KCSE B+. Fees: KSh 180,000–250,000/year.
UoN and Kenyatta University
University of Nairobi — School of Business with BCom Accounting and Finance options. Strong academic foundation. Government-sponsored placement available at KCSE C+. Kenyatta University — BCom with Accounting and Finance options. Kenya’s most widely attended business university with a large alumni network across all sectors. Both are significantly lower cost than private alternatives.
CPA Kenya — The Career Multiplier
The Certified Public Accountant (Kenya) qualification through KASNEB is the most career-transformative professional qualification for accounting and finance graduates. CPA(K) completion increases salaries by 50–100% over degree-only holders in most accounting roles. It is self-paced — 6 sections, 3 papers each — and can be studied while employed. KCSE C+ is sufficient to register for CPA Kenya regardless of whether you have a university degree.
Finance Career Paths in Kenya
Graduates work in: commercial banking (KCB, Equity, Co-op, NCBA, Absa), audit firms (Deloitte, KPMG, PwC, EY), insurance, investment banking, National Treasury, county treasuries, NGO grant management, Safaricom finance, and the rapidly growing fintech sector. Entry-level CPA(K) qualified accountant: KSh 70,000–150,000/month. CFO at major company: KSh 300,000–800,000+/month.
