The introduction of optical mark recognition machines for the marking of (Kenya Certificate of Primary exams) KCPE national exams with multiple choice scripts apart from insha and compositions that will be marked manually by KNEC markers has made work more easier and faster hence the results are moderated, standardized and released within a short period.

The optical mark recognition machines have helped reduce work by 50% , they capture marked data from candidates’ answer sheets using specialized scanning which electronically scores the papers.

The machines work with a scanning device that shines a beam of light on the .answer sheets. The contrasting reflection at preidentified positions on a page is then used to detect marked areas as they reflect less light than the blank areas of the paper.

Also, tallying of marks is no longer done manually. After marking the Insha and Composition scripts, the examiners will pass over the papers to the optical mark recognition machines, which will do the electronic tallying of marks in record time.
