Fashion design qualifications in Kenya follow the TVET progression from Artisan to Craft Certificate to Diploma. Understanding the difference between the first two levels helps you choose the most efficient starting point for your fashion career.
Fashion Design Qualification Framework
In Kenya’s TVET system, fashion and design qualifications are typically titled: Artisan Certificate in Garment Making or Fashion → Craft Certificate in Garment Technology or Fashion and Design → Diploma in Fashion and Design. All levels are examined by KNEC and lead to nationally recognized certificates. The Craft Certificate is the standard professional employment qualification in Kenya’s fashion sector.
Artisan Certificate in Fashion Design
Duration: 1 year. Entry: KCPE or equivalent. Content: basic sewing machine operation, simple garment construction, basic pattern use from commercial patterns, fabric knowledge fundamentals, hand stitching and finishing, simple measurements and alterations. Suitable for: entry-level garment production employment, basic alterations and repair work, starting to build a home-based tailoring client base. Starting income: KSh 12,000–22,000/month employed.
Craft Certificate in Fashion Design
Duration: 2 years. Entry: KCSE D+ or above. Content significantly expands: pattern drafting from measurements (not just using commercial patterns), garment grading and sizing, fashion illustration, production management principles, fabric science, business and entrepreneurship basics, professional finishing techniques, and a broader range of garment types. This qualification opens formal employment at fashion houses, garment factories, and uniform manufacturers. Starting income: KSh 20,000–40,000/month.
