Receptionist and front office qualifications in Kenya fall within the secretarial studies framework. Here is the clear difference between the first two qualification levels.
Qualification Framework
Receptionist and front office skills are certified through Kenya’s Secretarial Studies and Business Administration TVET programs. The progression: Artisan Certificate in Secretarial Studies or Business Studies → Craft Certificate in Secretarial Studies → Diploma in Business Administration. All levels are KNEC-examined at accredited TVET colleges.
Artisan Certificate Level
Duration: 1 year. Entry: KCPE or equivalent. Content: basic keyboard and typing, introduction to telephone communication, basic filing and record management, introductory customer service, simple correspondence, and basic office procedures. Qualifies for: entry-level receptionist at small businesses, basic clerical roles, office messenger with some administrative duties. Starting income: KSh 12,000–20,000/month.
Craft Certificate Level
Duration: 2 years. Entry: KCSE D+. Content expands significantly: professional typing at specified speeds, Microsoft Office proficiency, advanced telephone and email management, scheduling and diary management, professional business communication (written and verbal), customer service standards, basic bookkeeping, and office management basics. This is the standard qualification for formal receptionist positions at hotels, hospitals, corporates, NGOs, and government offices. Starting income: KSh 18,000–35,000/month.
