Electrical installation training does not have to be an out-of-pocket expense. Several Kenyan government programs offer free or heavily subsidized electrical training for qualifying students. This guide maps every available pathway.
National Youth Service (NYS) Electrical Programs
The NYS offers technical training including electrical installation for qualifying Kenyan youth. NYS-enrolled participants receive training at subsidized or zero cost, accommodation, stipends in some programs, and exposure to government infrastructure projects. Applications are made through county NYS recruitment offices. Requirements typically include Kenyan citizenship, age 18 to 30, KCSE certificate, and physical fitness. Check the NYS Kenya website for current recruitment periods and program availability.
HELB for Electrical Training
HELB loans are available to students at TVETA-accredited institutions studying electrical installation programs. Applications are made online at helb.co.ke after receiving an institutional admission letter. HELB covers tuition and contributes to upkeep costs. Repayment begins only after graduation and employment, making it a low-risk financing mechanism during training. HELB is a loan — not a grant — but the deferred repayment terms significantly reduce the immediate financial burden of training.
County Government Bursaries
All 47 county governments allocate bursary funds for residents pursuing further education including TVET training. Electrical installation students can apply for these bursaries through their ward administrators. Required documents: admission letter, national ID, parents’ IDs, evidence of financial need, ward residency confirmation. Apply at the start of each financial year (July) when bursary budgets are freshest. Amounts typically range from KSh 5,000 to KSh 30,000 per year.
NG-CDF Bursaries
Constituency Development Fund bursaries are distributed through each MP’s office. Available to any student in the constituency pursuing further education including TVET. Amounts vary by constituency. Apply at your constituency office with your admission letter, national ID, and family income documentation. NG-CDF bursary availability is sometimes advertised in local newspapers and radio stations — monitor these channels for announcements.
REREC and Energy Sector Training
The Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) and Kenya Power occasionally partner with TVET institutions to train electrical technicians linked to specific rural electrification projects. These training sponsorships are community-focused — trainees are expected to remain in their communities after training to maintain local electrical infrastructure. Watch for announcements from REREC area offices and county government energy departments.
EPRA Registered Contractor Apprenticeships
Some EPRA-registered electrical contractors accept apprentices who work alongside qualified electricians in exchange for practical training. This is not a formal government program but it is a recognized pathway to accumulating the supervised hours required for EPRA registration at low cost. Approach registered electrical contractors in your area about apprenticeship arrangements.
