One of the most common questions from prospective welding students in Kenya is how long the training takes. The answer depends on which qualification level you are pursuing and whether you study full-time or part-time. Here is the complete duration breakdown for every welding qualification available in Kenya.
Artisan Certificate Duration
An Artisan Certificate in welding or metal fabrication takes approximately 1 academic year (approximately 10 to 12 months) of full-time study. The program covers basic welding techniques (arc welding, gas welding), workshop safety, basic metal cutting, and entry-level fabrication. At the end of the program, students sit KNEC examinations and can also apply for NITA Grade III trade tests. Many students enter basic welding employment directly after this certificate.
Craft Certificate Duration
A Craft Certificate in welding or engineering (fabrication) takes approximately 2 academic years (approximately 20 to 24 months) of full-time study. This is the most common target qualification for employed welders in Kenya. The additional year covers advanced welding techniques (TIG, MIG, flux core), structural welding, pipe welding basics, reading engineering drawings, and quality control. KNEC craft certificate examinations are typically sat at the end of year 2.
Diploma Duration
A Diploma in Engineering (Welding and Fabrication option) takes approximately 2 to 3 academic years of full-time study. This is the highest TVET qualification available in welding and opens supervisory and project management roles in the construction, manufacturing, and petroleum sectors. Diploma programs include business studies, project management basics, and more advanced fabrication engineering alongside technical welding skills.
Part-Time and Evening Options
Some TVET colleges in major Kenyan towns offer evening or part-time welding classes for students who need to work while training. Part-time programs typically extend the duration by 50 to 100 percent — a 2-year full-time Craft Certificate may take 3 to 4 years part-time. Availability of part-time welding programs varies significantly by institution and location.
Adding NITA Trade Test Time
The KNEC certificate from your TVET program is separate from your NITA trade test certification. NITA trade tests are conducted at scheduled intervals — typically 3 to 4 times per year. After completing your KNEC program, you can register for and sit a NITA trade test at the appropriate grade level. Allow 1 to 3 months for the registration and examination process, plus 4 to 8 weeks for results. Total time from program completion to NITA certificate: approximately 3 to 6 months.
Factors That Affect Completion Time
Several factors influence how long your welding training actually takes: Attendance — Regular attendance is essential in practical programs; significant absences may require repeating modules. Examination performance — A failed KNEC module requires re-sitting at the next examination period, extending your timeline by 6 months. Institution schedule — Some smaller colleges have longer breaks between terms that extend the nominal calendar. Part-time vs full-time — Part-time adds significant time as described above.
