KNEC (Kenya National Examinations Council) examinations are the nationally recognized assessments that lead to official TVET certificates in Kenya. Understanding the registration process ensures you do not miss deadlines or face last-minute complications before your exams.
Who Handles KNEC TVET Registration?
Unlike KCSE registration which is handled at the school level, KNEC TVET exam registration is managed by your institution’s examination coordinator. Your college registers all eligible students as a batch — you do not register directly with KNEC as an individual for most TVET programs. Your responsibility is to ensure your name is on your institution’s candidates list and that all institutional requirements are met before the registration deadline.
Step-by-Step Registration Process
- Ensure your institution fees are fully paid — Most institutions will not register students with outstanding fee balances for KNEC exams.
- Confirm your name and details with your institution’s exam coordinator — Mistakes in your name or registration number are easier to fix before submission than after.
- Pay your KNEC exam fees — Either through the institution (most common) or directly as instructed. Current fees: approximately KSh 3,000 to KSh 6,000 per examination sitting for TVET programs.
- Receive your KNEC exam registration slip — This confirms your registration and shows your candidate number and examination centre.
- Confirm your exam centre and timetable — Check the KNEC website (knec.ac.ke) for examination timetables once released, typically 4 to 6 weeks before examinations.
Private (External) Candidates
Students who need to re-sit failed TVET papers can register as private candidates directly with KNEC. Private candidate registration is done at KNEC regional offices or through designated examination centres. Required: your previous KNEC certificate or results slip showing the papers you need to re-sit, national ID, and the registration fee. Private candidate registration deadlines align with institutional deadlines — do not miss these.
Key Deadlines to Know
KNEC TVET examinations are held in two main windows per year: around May/June and October/November. Institutional registration deadlines are typically 2 to 3 months before the examination — meaning February/March for the May sitting and July/August for the October sitting. Check your institution’s specific deadlines as they vary.
Checking Your Results
KNEC TVET results are published on the KNEC website at knec.ac.ke. You will need your candidate index number from your registration slip to check results. Results are also communicated to your institution and displayed on institution notice boards. Results are typically released 2 to 4 months after examinations. Your KNEC certificate is processed and issued approximately 3 to 6 months after results are published.
Collecting Your Certificate
KNEC certificates for TVET are collected from KNEC collection points — usually through your institution or from designated KNEC regional offices. You will need your national ID and original registration slip for collection. Certificates that are not collected remain at KNEC offices and can be collected at any time. If you need to replace a lost certificate, apply directly to KNEC with evidence of your original registration.
