From a 1-month sewing basics course to a 3-year Diploma in Garment Technology, fashion design training in Kenya covers a wide range of durations. Which level is right for you depends on your career goals, current qualifications, and how quickly you need to enter the market.
Short Courses (1 to 6 Months)
Short courses in fashion design focus on specific skills rather than full qualifications: basic sewing and machine operation (1 to 2 months), pattern cutting and drafting (2 to 3 months), embroidery and embellishment (1 to 2 months), fashion illustration (1 to 2 months). These are offered by private colleges and some TVET colleges as non-examined programs. They are ideal for students who want to start earning from specific skills quickly or who want to supplement an existing qualification with a new technique.
Artisan Certificate (1 Year)
The Artisan Certificate in Garment Making or Fashion Design takes approximately 1 academic year (10 to 12 months) of full-time study. Content covers basic sewing machine operation, garment construction fundamentals, basic pattern use, fabric knowledge, and production of simple garments. At the end of the year, students sit KNEC examinations. This qualification is suitable for entry into basic tailoring and garment production employment.
Craft Certificate (2 Years)
The Craft Certificate in Garment Technology or Fashion and Design takes approximately 2 academic years of full-time study. This is the most commonly targeted qualification for professional employment in Kenya’s fashion and garment sector. Content expands to pattern drafting, garment grading, fashion design illustration, production management, and business basics. Students sit KNEC examinations at end of each year.
Diploma (2 to 3 Years)
A Diploma in Fashion and Design or Garment Technology takes 2 to 3 academic years of full-time study. This is the highest TVET level in fashion, covering advanced design, production management, fashion merchandising, CAD for fashion, and fashion business. Diploma graduates qualify for design, production management, and teaching roles in the industry.
Part-Time Options
Evening and Saturday classes for fashion design are available at several private colleges in Nairobi and major towns. Part-time programs extend the duration to roughly double the full-time schedule — a 2-year Craft Certificate may take 3 to 4 years part-time. For students managing home responsibilities or employment while studying, part-time is often the only feasible option.
NITA Trade Test
After completing your KNEC program, registering for and sitting a NITA trade test in tailoring/garment making adds approximately 3 to 6 months for registration, examination, and results. NITA certification alongside your KNEC certificate maximizes your employability in both formal employment and self-employment contexts.
