Kenya’s national trade examination system has two main bodies: NITA (National Industrial Training Authority) for industrial trade tests, and KNEC (Kenya National Examinations Council) for academic TVET program examinations. Understanding how both work helps you get certified most efficiently.

Registering for NITA Trade Tests

NITA trade tests are open to both institutionally trained students and industrial candidates (workers with workplace experience). Registration is done directly at NITA offices:

  1. Visit your nearest NITA regional office (major offices in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret) or access the online portal at nita.go.ke
  2. Complete the NITA application form — available at offices or for download online
  3. Attach required documents: national ID or birth certificate, recent passport photos, evidence of training (school letter for institutional candidates) or work experience evidence (employer letter) for industrial candidates, and previous NITA certificates if upgrading grades
  4. Pay the registration fee via MPESA or bank deposit. Current fees: Grade III approximately KSh 1,000 to KSh 1,500, Grade II approximately KSh 1,200 to KSh 2,000, Grade I approximately KSh 1,500 to KSh 2,500
  5. Submit your complete application and receive your exam date and centre allocation

NITA Examination Calendar

NITA conducts trade tests multiple times per year across different trade categories. The specific examination calendar varies by trade and region. Check the current NITA examination calendar on their website (nita.go.ke) or at your nearest NITA regional office. Apply at least 6 weeks before your intended examination window — late registrations may not be processed in time.

Registering for KNEC TVET Examinations

KNEC TVET examinations are managed through your enrolled institution — you do not register directly with KNEC as an individual for most TVET programs. Your institution’s examination coordinator registers all eligible students as a batch. Your responsibilities: ensure fees are fully paid, confirm your name and details are correct on the candidates list, pay KNEC examination fees (approximately KSh 3,000 to KSh 6,000/sitting), and verify your exam centre and timetable once published.

💡 Tip: Confirm your KNEC registration at least 8 weeks before your examination date. Discover any problems (name errors, outstanding fees, missing registration) while there is still time to fix them.

Private Candidates for KNEC Re-Sits

Students re-sitting failed KNEC TVET papers register as private candidates directly with KNEC. Private candidate registration is done at KNEC regional offices or through designated examination centres. Required: previous results slip or certificate showing failed papers, national ID, and registration fee. Private candidate registration follows the same deadlines as institutional registration.

Checking Results and Collecting Certificates

NITA results: Released at NITA offices and through the nita.go.ke portal approximately 4 to 8 weeks after examinations. KNEC TVET results: Released on knec.ac.ke and communicated to institutions approximately 2 to 4 months after examinations. Certificate collection: NITA certificates collected from NITA regional offices with ID. KNEC certificates collected through your institution or from KNEC offices approximately 3 to 6 months after results publication.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between NITA and KNEC certification?
KNEC certifies academic completion of a formal TVET educational program — it is an academic qualification. NITA certifies practical trade competence through a hands-on assessment that can be taken by both formally trained students and experienced workers without formal education. Both are nationally recognized but serve different purposes. Having both certifications is the strongest combination for employment.
Can I sit NITA trade tests without attending a TVET college?
Yes — industrial candidates with documented workplace experience in a trade can register for and sit NITA trade tests without formal TVET college enrollment. You need a letter from your employer or evidence of self-employment confirming your years of experience in the trade. NITA assesses practical competence regardless of how it was acquired.
How many times per year are NITA trade tests conducted?
NITA conducts trade tests multiple times per year, with the frequency depending on the trade category and demand. Check the current schedule at your nearest NITA office or on nita.go.ke. In high-demand trades like electrical installation, motor mechanics, and plumbing, trade tests are typically conducted 3 to 4 times per year.
What happens if I fail a NITA trade test?
You can re-sit at the next available examination period. There is no limit on re-sits. Use your result to identify the specific practical areas where your performance was weakest and focus your preparation there. Additional supervised practice in the workshop areas that were weak typically produces significantly better re-sit results.
Are NITA and KNEC results released at the same time?
No — NITA and KNEC operate independently with their own examination and results timelines. KNEC TVET results take longer (2 to 4 months after exams, certificates 3 to 6 months after results). NITA results are typically faster (4 to 8 weeks). Students who sit both simultaneously receive their results at different times.
