Every TVET student in Kenya needs to understand two examination bodies: KNEC and NITA. KNEC examines students enrolled in formal TVET programs. NITA conducts trade tests for both institutional and industrial candidates. This guide explains how to register with both.
Registering for KNEC TVET Exams
KNEC examinations for TVET students are handled by your institution. Your college’s examination coordinator registers all eligible students with KNEC on your behalf. Your responsibility is to: ensure your fees are paid and your name appears on the college’s candidates list, confirm your KNEC registration number with your institution, pay the KNEC examination fee (typically KSh 3,000 to KSh 6,000) through your institution or directly as instructed, and verify your exam centre allocation and timetable before exam dates.
Key KNEC examination windows for TVET: May/June and October/November are the main examination periods. Check the KNEC website at knec.ac.ke for current examination timetables.
Registering for NITA Trade Tests
NITA registration is done directly at NITA offices or through the NITA online portal at nita.go.ke. Steps: collect and complete the NITA application form, attach required documents (ID, photos, evidence of training or work experience), pay the registration fee at the NITA office or via MPESA, submit the completed application, and await your exam date and centre allocation. Industrial candidates (workers seeking certification without formal training) follow the same process but with employer letters instead of school letters.
Should You Take Both KNEC and NITA Exams?
Taking both is common and beneficial. Your KNEC certificate certifies academic completion of your TVET program. Your NITA trade test certificate certifies practical trade competence recognized by employers across Kenya’s industrial sector. Many employers and contracting bodies require the NITA certification specifically — particularly in construction, electrical, and mechanical trades. Having both maximizes your employability.
Key Deadlines to Know
KNEC deadlines: Institutions typically have internal deadlines for registering students — usually 2 to 3 months before the examination period. Confirm your institution’s internal deadline and ensure all requirements (fees, coursework) are met before then. NITA deadlines: NITA trade tests are held multiple times per year. Check the NITA website or office for the current examination calendar and registration cutoff dates.
Checking Your Results
KNEC results are released on the KNEC portal (knec.ac.ke) and through your institution. NITA results are communicated through the NITA portal and regional offices. Both results can also be accessed through the KUCCPS portal for students who registered via that system. Keep your exam registration slip and national ID when checking results, as these are required for verification.
What to Do If You Are Not Satisfied With Results
Both KNEC and NITA have result appeal or re-marking processes. For KNEC, submit a re-marking request through your institution within the specified period after results release (usually 2 to 4 weeks). For NITA, contact the regional office about re-sit options. Re-marks and re-sits carry associated fees but are available for candidates who believe their results do not reflect their performance.
