ICT technicians are among the most consistently in-demand technical workers in Kenya’s economy. Every business, school, hospital, and government office needs people who can set up, maintain, and repair computer systems. Here is the complete roadmap to becoming a certified ICT technician in Kenya.
Choosing the Right Training Program
The main pathways to becoming a certified ICT technician in Kenya:
- Craft Certificate in ICT — 2 years, KNEC-examined. The most common and broadly recognized entry qualification for ICT technicians in Kenya. Covers hardware, networking, software support, and basic systems administration.
- Diploma in ICT — 2 to 3 years, KNEC-examined. Provides broader technical depth and opens access to higher-level positions.
- Short courses + vendor certifications — CompTIA A+, Cisco CCNA, or Microsoft certifications combined with practical experience are recognized by tech-focused employers.
Core Technical Skills to Develop
Kenyan employers hiring ICT technicians expect competence in: computer hardware assembly, maintenance, and repair; operating system installation and troubleshooting (Windows and basic Linux); network cabling and basic switch/router configuration; printer and peripheral maintenance; basic cybersecurity awareness; and helpdesk/user support skills. These skills are covered in KNEC Craft and Diploma ICT programs.
Getting Certified
Certification pathways: KNEC Craft/Diploma certificate — obtained through TVET college enrollment and KNEC examination. NITA trade test — available for ICT technicians with workplace experience. Vendor certifications — CompTIA A+, Microsoft Certified Professional, and Cisco CCNA are internationally recognized and valued by multinational employers and tech companies in Kenya.
Registration and Professional Bodies
The ICT Authority of Kenya registers ICT professionals and businesses. While individual registration is not mandatory for employment, it adds credibility. The Computer Society of Kenya (CSK) offers professional membership for ICT practitioners. Registering with these bodies also provides networking opportunities and access to industry developments.
Finding Your First ICT Technician Job
Common first employers for ICT technicians in Kenya include: IT support firms and managed service providers, schools and universities (computer lab technicians), banks and financial institutions (branch IT support), hospitals and clinics (HIS and equipment support), NGOs and development organizations, and county and national government ICT departments. Apply directly to these employers, use BrighterMonday and LinkedIn, and network within Kenya’s ICT community through events and online groups.
Salary Expectations
Entry-level ICT technicians with a Craft Certificate typically earn KSh 20,000 to KSh 40,000 per month. Diploma-level technicians earn KSh 35,000 to KSh 70,000. Those with vendor certifications (CCNA, MCP, CompTIA) earn more and have access to higher-level roles. Freelance IT support charges range from KSh 1,500 to KSh 5,000 per hour for individual jobs.
