Beauticians in Kenya provide skin care, facial treatments, makeup, nail care, and body therapy services. The formal requirements for professional beautician practice combine personal qualifications with business operating requirements. Here is everything you need to know.
Required Training and Qualifications
No single mandatory licensing body exists for individual beauticians in Kenya. However, formal qualifications are the foundation of professional practice and are required by most reputable employers. The recognized training pathways:
- Artisan Certificate in Beauty Therapy: 1 year, basic beauty treatments, KCPE entry
- Craft Certificate in Beauty Therapy and Hairdressing: 2 years, comprehensive beauty therapy skills, KCSE D+ entry
- Diploma in Beauty Therapy: 2 to 3 years, advanced treatments, management skills, KCSE C- entry
- Short courses: 1 to 6 months in specific areas (manicure/pedicure, facial therapy, makeup artistry)
KNEC Certification
KNEC-examined beauty therapy programs lead to nationally recognized certificates. These are the academic credentials that hotel spas, airlines, and formal beauty employers require. Complete your program at a TVETA-accredited institution and sit KNEC examinations to receive your certificate.
NITA Trade Test
The NITA trade test in beauty therapy or hairdressing certifies practical competence. Available to formally trained graduates and experienced self-taught practitioners. NITA Grade III, II, and I certifications represent increasing levels of competence. Apply at any NITA regional office after completing your training or after accumulating documented work experience.
Business Operating Requirements
To operate a beauty salon or therapy business legally in Kenya: Single Business Permit from your county government (annual, KSh 5,000 to KSh 15,000 depending on category). Health certificate from the local public health office — annual inspection of premises for hygiene standards (mandatory for all personal care businesses). KRA PIN for tax compliance. County health compliance — ensure your premises meet standards for waste disposal, ventilation, and hygiene that public health inspectors verify during the annual inspection.
Professional Body Membership
The Kenya Beauty Industry Association (KEBIA) offers professional membership for beauty therapists and salon owners. Membership adds credibility, provides access to industry news and training opportunities, and connects you with other beauty professionals. KEBIA membership is not mandatory but is recognized by premium employers and institutional clients who prefer to hire from recognized industry bodies.
Requirements for Hotel and Spa Employment
Premium hotel spa positions require: KNEC Craft Certificate or Diploma in Beauty Therapy, 1 to 2 years of post-qualification experience, practical skills assessment during the hiring process, professional presentation standards, and sometimes international certification (ITEC, CIDESCO, or CIBTAC) for the highest-end establishments. Apply directly to hotel HR departments and use BrighterMonday for formal vacancies.
