Getting ICT skills in Kenya does not always require full out-of-pocket payment. Several government and development sector programs offer free or heavily subsidized ICT training for qualifying Kenyan learners.
Government Digital Skills Programs
Google Digital Skills for Africa — Free, online, available to any Kenyan with internet access. Covers digital marketing, web basics, and career development. Google-branded certificate. Microsoft Digital Literacy program — Free digital literacy training available through Microsoft’s partnerships with Kenyan libraries and education institutions. KCICT (Kenya ICT Board) programs — The ICT Authority of Kenya periodically runs free digital skills programs for youth. Monitor the ICT Authority Kenya website for current programs.
NYS ICT Training
The National Youth Service offers ICT training as part of its technical skills programs. NYS ICT training is provided at subsidized or zero cost for qualifying youth. Apply through county NYS offices. Requirements: Kenyan citizenship, age 18 to 30, KCSE qualification, physical fitness. NYS ICT programs cover basic computer literacy through to intermediate ICT technician skills depending on the current program.
County ICT Training Programs
Several county governments run free or subsidized ICT training centers for residents. Nairobi City County, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nakuru counties have been particularly active in providing community digital literacy centers with free basic ICT training. Contact your county’s ICT or Education department to ask about currently available programs in your area.
NGO and Development Sector ICT Programs
Several NGOs fund ICT training for Kenyan youth: Digital Opportunity Trust (DOT) Kenya — Digital skills training for underserved youth. USAID-funded digital literacy programs — Various programs across Kenya. Aga Khan Foundation — ICT and entrepreneurship training programs. Action Aid Kenya — Digital skills components within youth livelihood programs. Contact these organizations’ Kenya offices for current program availability and application processes.
HELB for ICT Students
HELB loans are available to students at TVETA-accredited TVET institutions studying ICT programs. Apply at helb.co.ke after receiving your admission letter. HELB covers tuition and contributes toward living expenses. Repayment begins after graduation and employment. Combined with county bursaries and NG-CDF, HELB can effectively cover most of a government TVET college ICT program cost.
